Bluetooth | How does it work? Is it secure?

What could be more disturbing than cable? Our computer, TV, DVD player, telephone line at home etc. are coiled with piles of cables. And these cables are not only rubbish but also troublesome. Bluetooth technology has relieved us a lot from this cable disturbance. This technology helps you to connect your cellphone, digital camera, printer, PC and other gadgets together without any cable. Now, let’s know how this technology works and how much better this technology than Wi-Fi.

What is Bluetooth?

All of us use wireless technology nowadays. Radio receiver and Television set receive wireless signal thrown into the air. Using the same technology your cellphone carries calls from one phone to another. Even your Wi-Fi technology works on the same concept and exchange computer data. But, these technologies do not carry data with copper cable. They use radio wave for exchanging any data.

Bluetooth is such a technology works on radio wave. But this technology has been specially designed to establish relationship between short distance (10 meters or 10 feet). In general, you use this technology to download photos to your PC from your digital camera, to add wireless mouse or keyboard with your laptop, or to connect hands-free headset with your phone while safely driving the car. The electronic gadgets run by this technology, has an antenna fitted with them. This antenna can transmit and receive signals. So, they constantly transmit and receive a wireless signal with other gadgets. The old devices that have no previously fitted Bluetooth need to set adaptor to apply this technology. Such as, old laptop or desktop requires USB adaptor stick.

Based on device power, 3 classes of Bluetooth are seen. Class 1 is the most powerful which can spread signals up to 100 meters. We use class 2 most which can work up to 10 meter. Class 3 is the least powerful class which works up to 1 meter only.

How does Bluetooth work?

Bluetooth technology exchanges data using 79 different frequency (channel) in radio wave band. And it works over 2.45 GHz. Using the same frequency, radio, television, cellphone, even some medical equipment works. But, don’t worry. Your phone’s Bluetooth will not make a quarrel with anybody’s life-support machine. Because, the transmitter fitted to your phone or devise, is much less powerful. As a result, it cannot carry the signal so far. This is the biggest advantage of this technology.

This technology uses much less power. So its range is much limited. And theoretically, it is more secure than other wireless technology of higher range. But actually it has some disadvantages. The Bluetooth devices can automatically detect each other and can be connected directly to each other. The connected devices can communicate with each other at the same time. These devices never restrict each other connection. Because each of them pair each other using different frequency from 79 channel.

When one device is connected to another device and exchange data, it can also connect other devices at the same time. In Bluetooth technology, at least eight devices can be connected simultaneously at the same time.

How secure is Bluetooth?

Wireless technology is always less secure than cable connection. Braking security in cable connection is very tough. But it is an easy task in wireless technology. Because, in this technology, information flies continuously in the air. You will get signal easily if you have the device for receiving enough signal. However, encryption is used to eliminate this problem now.

But now the question is, how much secure is Bluetooth? Encryption is used to protect Wi-Fi technology. And it also has some security features. You can define certain limitations in Bluetooth devices. It will connect your specific faithful devices only. For example, if you defined your phone to connect hands-free headset only, it will not connect any other device. This technique is called device-level security. Again, if you want, you can specify what your Bluetooth devices can do and can not do. It is called service-level security.
